April is Financial Literacy Month – established in 2004 to highlight the importance of financial literacy to help people learn how to establish and maintain healthy financial habits like budgeting, debt management, and saving money.
Kirtland Credit Union has the tools to help you build a financially confident future with our Financial Wellness Center, developed in partnership with MoneyEdu, a leader in online financial education.
Budgeting is a cornerstone of financial literacy, providing a detailed roadmap that you can use to track income versus expenses, and make adjustments where necessary to stop overspending and start saving.
Our Financial Wellness Center has courses to teach you everything from the basics of budgeting to advanced strategies to help you stay on top of your money. You can also use our Monthly Budget calculator to help create your own budget, factoring in fixed and variable expenses, discretionary spending, and saving.
Debt can be easy to fall into and difficult to climb out of, but MoneyEdu’s library of articles on debt management and repayment strategies can give you the knowledge you need to take that first step.
If you’re debating strategies like the Avalanche method (paying highest interest debt off first) or the Snowball method (paying your smallest balance off first), we have calculators that can illustrate what is best for your long-term success.
We even have free personalized debt and budget counseling available through Money Management International, for when do-it-yourself budgeting and debt management requires a helping hand.
Once you’ve built a budget – perhaps by using the 50/30/20 rule (50% of your monthly income going towards needs, 30% going towards wants, and 20% going towards savings) – you can start to establish savings goals.
Our Emergency Fund calculator can show you just how much you should be saving for a rainy day, and our Savings Goal calculator illustrates how quickly monthly contributions and interest can turn a dream into reality.
MoneyEdu provides new financial literacy themes every week, with articles and other resources curated specifically for their point of focus – so you can log in and start learning without needing to know where to start.
Financial literacy isn’t just a matter of budgeting, managing debt, and saving money – it’s a process of continuous learning of skills you can apply to your daily life, to realize your long-term goals, to cut down on financial stress – and our Financial Wellness Center is here to help, during Financial Literacy Month and every month.
