Albuquerque, NM – October 7, 2025 – As the federal government shutdown continues, Kirtland Credit Union (KCU) is taking action to support its members—including active-duty service members, civilian employees, and families connected to Kirtland Air Force Base—who may be affected by delayed pay or furloughs.

“During times like these, financial uncertainty can weigh heavily on families who serve and support our nation,” said Matt Rarden, President and CEO of Kirtland Credit Union. “Our mission is clear: to stand by our members and help them navigate these challenges with confidence and stability.”

With more than 330,000 civilian Department of Defense employees facing potential furloughs nationwide—and nearly one in three military households reporting less than $3,000 in savings, KCU’s Member Assistance Program offers critical relief for those in need.

The Kirtland Credit Union Member Assistance Program provides options members may qualify for including:

  • Flexible payment deferments and grace periods on qualifying loans
  • Short-term bridge loans with low or no interest for eligible members
  • Fee relief, including help with overdraft charges where possible
  • Waived service charges and late fees on select accounts
  • Free financial counseling and budgeting guidance from KCU experts

These temporary relief measures are designed to provide both immediate financial breathing room and long-term stability until normal operations resume. Members can learn more and apply for assistance at KirtlandCU.org/assistance.

“As a credit union founded to serve those connected to Kirtland Air Force Base, we understand the unique pressures our members face,” Rarden added. “We remain committed to ensuring that no member faces these challenges alone.”

KCU will continue to monitor the federal shutdown and adjust support programs as needed.
