Share Certificate ladder

Certificate ladders offer a balance between liquidity and returns. By diversifying your investment across multiple certificates with increasing terms, you can capture the typically higher yields of longer-term certificates without forgoing periodic access to funds.

How does it work?

A one-year ladder, for example, may include four certificates with three, six, nine and twelve-month terms. As each certificate matures, it’s reinvested into the longest-term certificate. Then, after one year, you’ll have quarterly access to a portion of your investment while earning the typically higher returns of longer-term certificates. And remember, if your plans change, reinvestment in your ladder is always optional.

Glossary

A ladder is a savings strategy many people use to earn higher returns while having regular access to their funds. Ladders can be structured to make the best sense for each member. For instance, a short-term ladder can be structured with 3, 6, 9, and 12-month certificates. A long-term ladder could be built with 1, 2, 3, and 4-year certificates. It depends on the overall rate you’d like to earn and how often you’d like penalty-free access to your funds. Use our calculator to see how a ladder might work for you.

When discussing share certificates, the term refers to how long the certificate lasts. Kirtland CU has certificates as short as 3 months and as long as 5 years.

At credit unions, the interest earned on accounts is called dividends. The Dividend Rate is the fixed rate of dividends paid on an account. The DR does NOT account for compounding.

The Annual Percentage Yield is the rate the certificate earns, assuming dividends are not withdrawn, and includes compound interest. For example, if the dividend rate is 3.93% and interest is compounded monthly, the APY is 4%, assuming monthly dividends are not withdrawn from the account.

Certificate ladders offer a balance between liquidity and returns. By diversifying your money across multiple certificates with different terms, you can capture the typically higher yields of longer-term certificates while having periodic access to funds.

Currently, the yield curve is inverted. This means that short-term rates are higher than long-term rates. (Typically, you’d earn higher rates on longer investment terms – but things are a bit weird right now). So, if you wanted to save $10,000 for 12 months, you could either:

  • Set up a 12-month certificate (if you won’t need your money for 12 months), or
  • Set up 3, 6, 9, and 12-month certificates and distribute your money across all four. You would earn a little less than the 12-month certificate by itself, but you’d have penalty-free access to some of your money every 3 months.

A certificate by itself is not a ladder. A ladder is a set of certificates with varying terms that help balance high returns with regular access to your funds. For a ladder strategy to work best, the certificates need to be:

  • Set up at the same time, and
  • Renew to the longest term on the ladder.

Existing members can get their ladder started in online or mobile banking.

Click “Add a Certificate or Money Market” in online banking under the Apply Today menu*. Then select “Existing Member Account.” Add each step of the ladder (use the “+” button) and choose the “Continue” button at the bottom of the page. Most of the application information is pre-populated. However, you’ll need to complete some of the required security fields (“*”).

In mobile banking, click on the “…” in your app and select “New Loan/Share.” Then select “Existing Member Account.” Add each step of the ladder (use the “+” button) and choose the “Continue” button at the bottom of the page.
