Four Easy Ways to Stay Safe Online

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month – and the easiest way to achieve cybersecurity on an individual level is to maintain awareness of what you can do to reduce risk while online and protect your accounts’ integrity.

Here are four easy ways you can stay safe online, whether at home, work, or school:

Use strong passwords / passphrases

Strong passwords have the following characteristics:

  • Length: The longer a password is, the more likely it is to be able to protect against brute-force attacks. Aim for a password that is at least 12-16 characters long if possible.
  • Complexity: Using different character types – uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols – will make passwords more difficult to guess.
  • Uniqueness: Every account you use should have its own password that is unique to that account.
  • Randomness: Avoid easily guessable information like names, dates, or common dictionary words when creating a password.

Password managers can help to create passwords that satisfy all of these characteristics, and they are now incorporated into modern web browsers and available as standalone applications.

Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Strong passwords are just the first line of defense in keeping your accounts secure – enabling multi-factor authentication gives you a second line of defense that requires authentication for login attempts using a one-time passcode on your phone, answering security questions, or entering biometric verification like a fingerprint or facial recognition scan.

Enable MFA on all your online accounts that offer it, especially accounts for sensitive information like your email, financial accounts, and social media profiles.

Do not share your MFA information like security questions or one-time passcodes with anyone.

Recognize and report phishing

Be cautious of unsolicited messages asking for personal information. Avoid sharing sensitive information or credentials with unknown sources. Report phishing messages and delete the message.

Remember: Kirtland CU will never contact you to ask for your login or payment information such as your email, online credentials, access codes, or your debit card number, PIN, or CVV.

Update your software

Regularly check for updates for your device’s operating system and any applications you use, and install them when they become available. Ensuring your software is up to date is the best way to make sure you have the latest security patches in place.
